A Prayer for the Death of a Beloved Pet by Rabbi Barry H. Block (of Temple Beth-El in San Antonio)

O Lord our God, we come before You this day in sadness. (Pet’s name), who brought us so much joy in life, has now died. (His/Her) happy times in our family’s embrace have come to an end. We miss (pet’s name) already. Help us, O God, to remember the good times with (pet’s name). Remind us to rejoice in the happy times (he/she) brought to our home. Let us be thankful for the good life we were blessed to give to (him/her). We are grateful to You, God, for creating (pet’s name), for entrusting (him/her) to our care, and for sustaining (him/her) in our love for a measure of time. We understand that all lives must die. O God, as we have taken care of (pet’s name) in life, we ask that You watch over (him/her) in death. You entrusted (pet’s name) to our care; now, we give (him/her) back to You. The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and the frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group. You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated. Author Unknown

At the Death of a Wild Animal

Almighty God, who makes the beasts of the wild move in beauty and show for the glory of your Name: We grieve the death of this creature, in whose living and dying the power of your Spirit was made manifest. We reverence the loss of that which was never ours to claim but only to behold with wonder; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

General prayers for animals

A Prayer by Saint Francis of Assisi for our Animal Friends

Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have. (Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer). Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen.

St BasilA Prayer for Animals Attributed to St. Basil

Enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, our brothers and sisters the animals to whom you gave the earth as their home in common with us. We remember with shame that in the past we have exercised the high dominion of humans with ruthless cruelty, so that the voice of the earth  which should have gone up to you in song has been a groan of travail. May we realize that they live, not for us alone, but for themselves, and for you, and that they love the sweetness of life. We pray through our Savior Jesus Christ who lifts up and redeems us all. Amen.

She was a poodle mix and I found homes for the 2 puppies that survived and kept Miss Sassypooh. She was a little fireball and was my constant companion, taking her on trips to Georgia and wherever I went on weekends. Everyone loved Sassy. Two years ago she became blind and last year she started to get seizures, but I could not in my heart put her to sleep. Last week she stopped eating and the day before Mother’s Day I took her to the vet to see if IVs would strengthen her again, but she was so weak and I knew in my heart she was ready to go and I expressed this to her and thank her for all the wonderful years we had together. My baby will always be with us. We love and miss you so much Sassypooh.

  32. Please pray for my Jenna. I lost (euthanized) my little Jenna on July 4, 2016. She may had been sick awhile, but I noticed it two weeks ago, and this last week has been horrible. She suffered terribly and I feel so guilty. I could not find a decent vet/animal doctor who did not just want me to pay for her treatment like an estimate. I loved her and wanted the best for her. I hope the baby aspirin did not cause Jenna to have low red blood cells, and I feel so guilty about trying to decide about a transfusion, etc., she was so sweet, and I am really going to miss her. I know I did the right thing when I saw her the last time because she suffered way too long, and I had her in emergency hospital from 9:15 am and she lost her little life at after 3:30 pm, I was with her, and I feel so bad for her. All the doctors, I took her to were just guessing, and the one who gave her the two shots and liquid medicine was not right. The emergency room doctors are bitter, and I just pray that my little girl was treated with love and respect because she was a joy to my life for fourteen years when I rescued her at fifteen months old. God bless my Jenna, and may she be with God as I told her when she died. She will be so missed, her little licks, and checking on me, and following me around, and sitting next to me at the computer, and in my bedroom, etc. God bless Jenna.

    • God does bless Jenna, Judy. I also pray that he comfort you. If only they could talk. We can’t read their minds. We do the best we can with the information we have at the time. She is no longer in pain. Please picture her as a young vibrant kitty. Lord, please ease Judy’s pain. Amen.

  42. Please pray for my little cat Jazzy. We rescued her and another cat from the shelter five years ago. Someone had cut off the tip of her tail, she had an untreated eye infection and her hair was falling out. She was such a little mess. Through love she turned into the most beautiful and loving black cat ever. She is truly a daddy’s girl. My shadow. We are inseparable.
A week ago she was having difficulty breathing. The vet drained a lot of fluid from her thoracic cavity and she has been diagnosed with idiopathic chlyothorax, a rare and often fatal disease. She’s only five. I spent Christmas Day at the emergency vet having her drained a second time. She is on medication but so far it’s not looking too promising.
I cannot handle the thought of her passing. She is my first pet in 30 years. We have no children so to me she is my daughter. Please if anyone has the time say a prayer that Jazzy may be healed through Christ and live a long life with us.
    Thank you.

  45. I’ll pray for you of course 🙂

Two my dogs were blind. It is difficult, but it is possible to live with it. Especially if the dogs can hear and sniff. These senses are mostly important for them. You can have many great days with your dog, even if he’s blind.

Sorry if my English isn’t quite understandable.

She has suffered from mast cells for many years, but we were always able to remove and treat them in the past. Due to her age, this one just grew quickly and even if we operate, it would not prolong her life much. I just ask that you pray that she does not suffer much in these times. I know the inevitable is near and that she lived a long and happy life with us, but it’s still not easy. Thank you everyone and God bless you all!

    • Jeanny,

It’s so hard to lose our furr babies. I am so sorry. I wish we could have them longer. You’re both in my prayers.

    • Jenny: My name is Fred, and right now our 16 year old toy poodle, Evelyn, is at the vet’s and we’re waiting and praying for good news concerning what the doctor has diagnosed as pancreatitis and stage 2 kidney disease. It seems like this came upon her very suddenly; we took her in about a week ago because she was acting a little funny; a bit lethargic and eating a bit less than usual. They gave her some pain meds and we brought her home. It seemed like she was doing better; eating more than usual and bouncing around the house like her old self. Then, she started to go backward. she became lethargic again, and began pacing around the house when she wasn’t laying around. I tried taking her on a short walk with our other dog, but it was evident that her strength was failing. We decided to take her back to the vet, where they drew blood.
They called us a couple days later to inform us of the results of the blood work, which showed the pancreatitis and kidney disease,
This last Saturday we took her in once again, and they started her on IV therapy. We went in yesterday to visit and brought in some of the food she eats at home because she has been eating little of the “healthy” food they’ve been trying to feed her.
I went to see her today and was told she has eaten virtually nothing. She whines and refuses food even when I try to feed it to her, and she paces the small room where her and the other pets’ cages are, whining continually. I asked the doctor why she has deteriorated so rapidly and the answer I was given is it might be due to the stress and anxiety of being in her current environment. I guess I just don’t see how an animal that was eating and getting along pretty well a couple weeks ago can be reduced to her current state. She seems completely different from the pet I’ve known and loved for over 15 years. All I could do is sit in that room and cry. I know she’s old, but I’ve been praying for a miracle that would prevent her from being taken from us now.
If that miracle doesn’t arrive, we will do what has to be done, and it will feel like a part of my heart has been ripped out. I covet and appreciate the prayers of everyone on this forum; please pray that my baby will live. Thank you.

  51. Thank you,and to everyone who understand, maythe LORD,be with all of us,GOD bless you dustycatwriter, for your blog, for your ministry it helps to know GOD,is useing you to help so many people to cope with their lossesthank you for your prayers.

  52. Our beloved Smokey is suffering from kidney disease. We are feeding him whenever he seems to want food, but he is not eating well on the whole. We are using herbal drops and special food from the vet, but we feat he has not long to go. I have written a haiku for him that expresses our feelings and may help others.

    Brave little kitty
You don’t know how sick you are
    We love you through tears

  53. So sorry about your pet.Just keep him comfortable and let him know how much love you have for him .And you will ser him in heaven one day.

  54. Please pray for the sweet little gray kitten I found in the middle of the highway today in Corinth, I ran out into the middle of highway traffic and stopped all cars to rescue little baby kitten. She is at the home of a foster parent, please pray she gets a good safe permanent happy home. Thanks a lotl

In return for your prayer, I give you this:
Dearest Lord in Heaven above, richly and fully bless all animals, families and readers mentioned here and with us today. Have mercy and send Your healing Spirit into each living being, restore them, grant them all the gift of faith, and take us all to Heaven when You are ready for us. Thank you God The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In Jesus Name we pray, Amen.

  55. I humbly ask for your prayers that in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior my sweet little Maltese, Cinco, of 12.5 years old be healed of his pain, paralysis and whatever other affliction ails him at this moment.

Please pray for the vets and those of us who love him that we know how to best care for him. We currently “flip” him every 4-6 hours so that he’s not lying on one side for too long; we wipe him down, wash him, change his pads, give him medicine, and just love on him and pray over him. I pray that my little boy knows how much we love him.

I believe in miracles and the power of prayer. Thank you for anyone out there who will agree with me in prayer and join me in lifting up my Dog in prayer to ask God to grace us with his healing power. And may God bless all of you too who are praying for the same for your little fur babies. I’ll pray for you all too. In Jesus’ name… Amen….

  56. I believe in miracles, too, and I’m praying in Jesus’ Name that we both see our loved ones healed and set free from disease and pain. I ask the Lord Jesus Christ, lord of all creation, to heal Cinco and Evelyn and restore them to us. Right now I’m trying to deal with a sense of frustration and disappointment (not very well, I’m afraid), because when I visited Evelyn this morning, she looked so much better and the doctor was talking about releasing her today. I just got a call from my wife informing me that Evelyn had thrown up and was still not eating, so she will be staying at the hospital for another night. They will draw blood today and send it to the lab, and it will be back tomorrow. I am desperate for the Lord to heal her, and I don’t really care if it’s through medicine or a supernatural touch. Where I am at right now is I need to decide whether or not to receive a a less than favorable report from the lab, if that’s what comes back, or if I will hold on to my faith and declare that Evelyn is healed, no matter what. I suppose this may be a test to see if I will hang on to God no matter what, but I really hope that’s not the case.

  57. Thank you for providing such lovely prayers. I was searching for suitable prayers to help our daughter. She has severe learning difficulties and loves her dogs. Yesterday she found her smallest one, 4 year old Dusty, dead in the garden. He had some problems with hair loss and weight gain recently and the vets thought it might be due to hormones. So he was booked in for neutering this week to see if that would help. He was his happy mischievous self yesterday morning and lay down in the sun on his usual spot in the garden and passed away. She thought he was asleep and tried to wake him. She is so distraught and I’m not much help to her as I am heartbroken as well. I blame myself, I feel I should have pushed the vets to do more. I feel that I’ve let Dusty down. I know people scoff at the idea of grieving for pets but it is real pain that is experienced and real sense of loss felt. Please pray for us.

    • Josephine, I wish they could talk to us and tell us when they feel bad. Instead they hide symptoms. You did the best you could with the information you had. Unfortunately so many diseases seem to appear suddenly. Forgive yourself and concentrate on your daughter. Perhaps adopting a pet scheduled for euthanasia at the shelter will help alleviate some of the pain. An you and Dusty save a life.

You are all in our prayers.

  58. Here is my thoughts which I posted on another website… concerning my own situation. After much much prayer and thought on this very matter of beloved pet deaths…

I have done a LOT of research on this subject. I have a sermon prepared to cover basically this EXACT topic… resurrection of a dearly beloved pet dog, the attitude of Jesus Christ, and the work to be done on the part of the pet owner / intercessor. This is not a free ride. Take your prayer position, hit your knees, and pray till you get your results.

Everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives. Ask and keep on asking. Persevere. Persist. Don’t give up. Have the attitude… I don’t care how many meals I miss, or how long it takes, I am not getting off my knees until my baby is brought back to me and healed, in the name of Jesus, the Anointed One (Christ). The Messiah, The Resurrection and The Life.

The thief comes only to kill, steal or destroy, but Jesus has come that we might have life, and have that to the fullest.

Find a prayer place where you can be undisturbed, where you can go for however long it takes. Tell those who must know not to bother you unless its a matter of life and death. It really helps and bodes WELL for you and your case before the throne of grace and our Heavenly Father IF you can pray in tongues… the prayer language… praying in the Holy Spirit. It’s perfect prayer, and the devil CANNOT fight it, because its a mystery, and NO ONE understands its meaning. First Corinthians 14, verses 2, 4.

Your tongues pray to God our Father in a prayer language that only he understands. It is perfect prayer. The devil cannot fight against it and you cannot unbelieve it. It is you praying for your needs through the language of the third member of the Trinity of the Holy God. The Holy Spirit gives you the tongues.

If you use English and do not have the Holy Spirit prayer language, go for it. Remind yourself and the devil of the many verses that cover your request. Read John chapter 11. Jesus said ask me anything in my name, and I will do it. Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is impossible to those who believe. God honors persistence in continual prayer. Keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking. The doors will open. Its a promise from God almighty. If it does not happen for you, the Bible has no integrity and God is a liar. But the word says, God is NOT a man that he should lie, nor the son of man that he should relent. Scripture cannot be broken.

Ask and you will receive. Ask anything in his name, and Jesus will do it for you to glorify the Father. Believe what you ask for when you pray according to Mark 11. Hit your knees. Make the case to the Father. First, take communion and search your heart and soul and repent of any and all sin. State your confirmation of your basic faith in the Lord’s Prayer and in the Apostle’s Creed.

People get miracles this way all the time. Google David Hogan, Bruce Allen, James Maloney, and many more missionaries and super pastors, prophets, and apostles of our day. Anyone who tries to talk you out of this scripture… is an unbeliever. “But, when the son of man returns, will he find faith in the earth.”

The times quoted by successful dead raisers range from almost instantaneous response and resurrection to prayers lasting 14 hours straight by two women praying on a dead son together, alone, far from hospitals in a Mexican village. There is discussion by Rev Dr Bruce Allen that the Chinese are now resurrecting people out of crypts who have been buried… for some considerable time. Nothing is impossible with God. The ball IS in our court.
